A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"People buying these treatments should be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a reversion to starting weight in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians argue that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have come off the medication describe a sudden return of appetite.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly starving," described a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.
- Use is more common among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle changes.
