"When are you interviewing the Haim sisters?" a text reads. "I wanted to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There is only one problem: The sender also longs to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are far from alone. Several famous admirers have publicly coveted the role.

One thing is obvious something is at play. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana began their path performing shows at neighborhood delis with their family. Today, they are multiple Grammy hopefuls.

Like all the greatest bands, they're a close trio. Their music videos often feature them striding in harmony down the streets of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that fans approached us and said, 'Watching you live, I bought a drum kit'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the Haim siblings. "That's the ultimate compliment. That's an award in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire people to make music."

"Therefore anyone is invited to be the fourth member of Haim."

Historic Nod

The group are connecting from their homes, where they're resting up after an lengthy tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're presently celebrating the news it's been nominated for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the pioneering all-female band ever in consideration for the award.

"I watch the announcements every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," explains Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the sisters.

"We really set out to make a rock album this time, so it's a major achievement," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the women that came before us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The project emerged from a time of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're glad to be free, but not quite ready to let go.

The themes detail breakups and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in real life who they want to be.

"That's a perfect way of putting it, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Music

That developed confidence demanded a new sound – more organic and immediate than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the percussion.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she emphasizes.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums won't commence until we find the perfect drum sound."

Experiences and Collective Laughter

The trio's candor fueled the album's marketing, where the sisters disclosed some of their romantic tales.

Someone left Este over a health concern. Alana recalled a story of flying to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to laugh at those stories and have them tell you more outrageous stories, it's incredible."

A Confident Future

You can clearly sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their position in the industry.

They're top-billed acts, with successful albums and an global fan base.

Yet Haim will forever be their primary priority.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was little," shares Alana. "It's like no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
